How the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method Actually Works
The circumference-based body fat formula explained, including why it uses logarithms and how accurate it really is.
Unlike BMI, the U.S. Navy body fat method tries to estimate actual body composition — not just a weight-to-height ratio — using nothing more than a tape measure.
The formula (men)
Body Fat % = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450
Women use a similar formula that also incorporates a hip measurement, since fat distribution patterns differ meaningfully by sex.
Why logarithms show up here
The formula was derived from regression analysis against actual body density measurements (from hydrostatic weighing) in a research population — the logarithmic terms are simply what best fit the real, non-linear relationship between circumference measurements and measured body density in that data set. It's an empirical fit, not a theoretical derivation like F=ma.
Worked example
A man with a 90cm waist, 40cm neck, and 178cm height: waist − neck = 50cm. log₁₀(50) ≈ 1.699. log₁₀(178) ≈ 2.250. Plugging in: 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.699) + (0.15456 × 2.250) = 1.0324 − 0.3242 + 0.3478 = 1.0560. Then 495 / 1.0560 − 450 ≈ 468.75 − 450 = 18.75% body fat — solidly in the "fitness" range for men.
How accurate is this, really?
Validation studies generally find the Navy method within about 3-4 percentage points of more precise methods (like DEXA scans) for most body types, but it becomes noticeably less accurate at the extremes — very lean or very heavy individuals tend to see larger errors, since the original regression was fit against an average military population, not the full range of human body types.
Why waist minus neck (not waist alone) matters
Using waist circumference minus neck circumference (rather than waist alone) is a clever normalization: neck size correlates with overall frame size, so subtracting it partially controls for the fact that a larger-framed person naturally has a larger waist without necessarily carrying more fat. It's an imperfect proxy, but a meaningfully better one than waist size alone.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring waist circumference inconsistently (at the navel vs. narrowest point vs. belly button level all give different readings) — pick one landmark and stay consistent between measurements
- Comparing Navy method results directly to a DEXA scan number as if they should match exactly — treat this as a trend-tracking tool, not a lab-grade measurement
- Ignoring that the formula's constants are sex-specific and non-interchangeable — the women's formula (which adds hip circumference) is not just a tweak of the men's version
