Converting Energy and Pressure Between Common Units

How joules convert to kilowatt-hours, and PSI converts to bar, with real utility-bill and tire-pressure examples.

Energy and pressure conversions both connect a scientific base unit (joules, pascals) to the practical units people actually see on a utility bill or a tire gauge.

Energy: joules to kilowatt-hours

1 kWh = 3,600,000 joules — because a kilowatt-hour is, by definition, 1,000 watts sustained for 3,600 seconds (one hour), and a watt is one joule per second. Converting 5,000 joules: 5,000/3,600,000 ≈ 0.001389 kWh — a tiny fraction, illustrating just how much energy a single kilowatt-hour (the unit on every electricity bill) actually represents compared to the joule, physics' base energy unit.

Pressure: PSI to bar

1 bar ≈ 14.5038 PSI, or equivalently, 1 PSI ≈ 0.0689476 bar. Converting 100 PSI: 100 × 0.0689476 ≈ 6.895 bar. Neither unit is a "round" multiple of the other because PSI (pounds per square inch, an imperial unit) and bar (based on the metric-adjacent unit of atmospheric pressure) were defined independently, from entirely different unit systems, much like the Celsius/Fahrenheit temperature relationship elsewhere on this site.

Why kilowatt-hours, not joules, appear on utility bills

A joule is simply too small a unit for practical household energy billing — a typical home uses many millions of joules per day. Kilowatt-hours condense that into a much more manageable number of digits (a typical monthly bill might read "600 kWh" rather than "2,160,000,000 joules"), which is purely a matter of practical convenience, not a different physical quantity.

Why tire pressure gauges sometimes show both units

Because PSI is standard in the US while bar (or kPa) is standard in much of the rest of the world, many tire pressure gauges and vehicle manuals display both units side by side — a US car's manual might specify "32 psi (2.2 bar)" for exactly this reason, both describing the identical target pressure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing energy (joules, kWh — a total amount) with power (watts — a rate), which are related but not interchangeable units
  • Assuming PSI-to-bar conversion is a round, easy-to-remember number — it isn't, since the two units originate from unrelated measurement systems
  • Using a tire's bar specification with a PSI gauge (or vice versa) without converting first, risking significant over- or under-inflation
