Fence panels and posts: why posts = panels + 1
Panels Needed = ceil(Total Fence Length / Panel Width). A 200-foot fence run using 6-foot panels needs ceil(200/6) = 34 panels. Posts needed = panels + 1 = 35 posts — not the same number, because each panel needs a post at both ends, and adjacent panels share a post between them. A straight run of N panels always needs exactly N+1 posts, regardless of panel width, since only the two very end posts aren't shared with a neighboring panel.
Insulation R-value: layers simply add
Unlike most physical properties that combine in complicated ways, R-value (thermal resistance) for stacked insulation layers is refreshingly simple: Total R-Value = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + ... A wall combining an R-15 batt, an R-8 rigid foam layer, and an R-3 sheathing layer: total R-value = 15+8+3 = R-26 for the complete assembly.
Why R-value addition works when other properties don't
R-value is specifically defined as a measure of resistance (the inverse of conductance), and resistances in this kind of "layers in series" arrangement always add directly — the same principle behind why resistors in series add directly in an electrical circuit (R_total = R1+R2), a mathematical parallel that isn't a coincidence, since both describe resistance to a flow (heat in one case, current in the other) through sequential layers.
Why higher R-value doesn't always mean better real-world performance
R-value measures resistance to conductive heat transfer specifically — it doesn't account for air leaks, moisture performance, or installation quality, all of which can meaningfully undermine a wall assembly's real-world thermal performance even with a high calculated R-value on paper.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting that fence post count is panels-plus-one, not equal to the panel count — a common off-by-one error when ordering materials
- Assuming R-values from different manufacturers or insulation types are always directly comparable per inch of thickness — actual R-value per inch varies by material type
- Adding R-values from materials with significant air gaps or compression between them without accounting for reduced effective performance in the real installed assembly
