Stellar parallax: measuring distance without leaving Earth
Distance in parsecs is simply 1 divided by the parallax angle in arcseconds. A parallax of 0.1 arcseconds implies a distance of 10 parsecs — this method only works for relatively nearby stars, since parallax angles shrink below measurable precision beyond a few thousand light-years.
Redshift: measuring motion through wavelength shift
Redshift (z) is the fractional change between a light source's rest wavelength and its observed wavelength. A hydrogen emission line shifting from 656.3nm (rest) to 656.6nm (observed) gives a redshift of about 0.00046 — positive z indicates the source is moving away from the observer.
Albedo: how much light a surface reflects
Albedo is reflected radiation divided by incoming radiation. A surface reflecting 300 W/m² out of 1,000 W/m² incoming has an albedo of 30% — close to Earth's actual average albedo, which comes from the combined reflectivity of clouds, ice, oceans, and land.
Centripetal acceleration: the physics behind orbital and circular paths
Centripetal acceleration is v²/r, always directed toward the center of a circular path. An object moving at 10 m/s along a 5m-radius path experiences 20 m/s² of centripetal acceleration — the same formula applies whether describing a car on a curve or a planet in circular orbit.
