Karvonen formula: a more personalized training zone
Rather than a flat percentage of max heart rate, the Karvonen formula factors in resting heart rate too. At age 30 with a resting heart rate of 60 and a 70% target intensity, target heart rate works out to 60 + (190 − 60) × 0.70 = 151 bpm — accounting for individual fitness level in a way a simple max-HR percentage doesn't.
Heart rate recovery: a fitness marker after intense effort
Heart rate recovery is simply peak effort heart rate minus heart rate one minute later. Dropping from 160 to 130 bpm in one minute is a recovery of 30 bpm — faster recovery generally reflects better cardiovascular fitness, and is one to watch for improvement over a training block.
The 10% rule: pacing weekly mileage increases
Increasing weekly running mileage by more than roughly 10% is commonly cited as a risk factor for overuse injury. Running 20 miles this week suggests capping next week at 20 × 1.10 = 22 miles — a conservative guideline, not a strict law, but a reasonable default absent other guidance.
Race time prediction: estimating a new distance from a recent one
Riegel's formula predicts one distance's time from a known performance at another distance, raised to a fixed exponent (1.06). A recent 5K in 28 minutes predicts a one-mile time based on that same relationship — useful for setting a realistic goal pace at an untested distance.
Calories to distance: turning a calorie target into a distance goal
Rather than a vague "burn some calories" goal, this converts a specific calorie target into an actual distance to cover, based on body weight — a 300 kcal target for a 70 kg person works out to roughly 4.76 km (about 6,250 steps), turning an abstract number into a concrete walk or run to plan around.
