Geometry Problem Solving: Cubes, Parallelograms, and Polygon Angles

Cube volume and surface area, parallelogram area, quadratic vertex, regular polygon interior angles, and percentage point difference — five geometry and algebra calculations.

From solid geometry to algebra to basic statistics comparisons, these five calculations solve problems that come up constantly in coursework.

Cube volume and surface area: two measurements, one input

A cube with a 4-unit side has a volume of 4³ = 64 cubic units and a surface area of 6 × 4² = 96 square units — both derived from the same single side-length measurement, since a cube's geometry is fully determined by one number.

Parallelogram area: base times perpendicular height

Area equals base times height — but height must be the perpendicular distance to the opposite side, not the length of the slanted side. A base of 10 and height of 6 gives an area of 60 square units, the same formula that applies to a rectangle as a special case.

Quadratic vertex: finding a parabola's turning point

For y = x² − 4x + 3, the vertex x-coordinate is −b/(2a) = 4/2 = 2, and substituting back gives vertex y = 2² − 4×2 + 3 = −1 — so the vertex is (2, −1), the parabola's minimum point since a is positive.

Regular polygon interior angles: a direct formula, no measuring required

A hexagon's interior angle is (6−2) × 180° / 6 = 120° — this formula works for any regular polygon, without needing to measure or estimate.

Percentage point difference: not the same as percentage change

Going from 45% to 60% is a 15 percentage point increase — a distinct concept from percentage change (which would describe that same move as a 33.3% relative increase). Confusing the two is one of the most common statistics reporting errors.

Precise geometry and algebra, without the guesswork

Each of these five calculations replaces an error-prone manual process with a direct formula. Try the cube volume and surface area calculator, parallelogram area calculator, quadratic vertex calculator, regular polygon interior angle calculator, and percentage point difference calculator.
