RPM to linear speed: rotational speed made tangible

A 0.3-meter-diameter wheel spinning at 1,200 RPM has a rim (tangential) speed of π × 0.3 × 1,200 / 60 ≈ 18.85 meters per second — converting an abstract rotational speed into a concrete linear speed that's easier to compare to everyday reference points.

Moment of inertia: rotational resistance to acceleration

A solid cylinder's moment of inertia is half its mass times its radius squared (I = ½mr²) — this quantity plays the same role in rotational motion that mass plays in linear motion, determining how much torque is needed to achieve a given angular acceleration.

Natural frequency: the rate a system wants to vibrate at

A spring-mass system's natural frequency is f = (1/2π) × √(k/m) — every mechanical system has one, and matching a driving frequency to it causes resonance, which is why engineers deliberately design systems to avoid operating near their own natural frequency.

Fluid velocity: the flow rate and area relationship, inverted

Fluid velocity equals flow rate divided by cross-sectional area — the same relationship as flow rate, solved for velocity instead, useful when you know the flow rate a system needs to handle and want to check whether pipe velocity stays within safe limits (to avoid excessive pressure loss or erosion).
