Solution Concentration: Five Ways to Express the Same Idea

Mass percent, molality, parts per million, percent composition, and dilution factor — five different units for describing how concentrated a solution is.

Chemistry has more than one way to answer "how much is dissolved in this?" — and the right unit depends on what you're about to do with the number.

Mass percent: the simplest ratio

Mass percent divides solute mass by total solution mass. 15 g of solute in 250 g of solution gives (15 / 250) × 100 = 6% — no need to know the solute's molar mass, which makes mass percent convenient for quick lab prep.

Molality: the temperature-independent option

Molality divides moles of solute by kilograms of solvent (not solution). 0.5 mol dissolved in 0.4 kg of solvent gives a molality of 1.25 mol/kg. Because it's based on mass rather than volume, molality doesn't shift with temperature the way molarity does — which is exactly why it's the unit used in colligative property calculations like freezing point depression.

Parts per million: for very dilute solutions

PPM expresses concentration as mg of solute per kg of solution. 50 mg dissolved in 1 kg of solution is 50 ppm — the standard unit for water quality testing and trace contaminant reporting, where percentages would require awkwardly small decimals.

Percent composition: concentration within a compound, not a solution

Percent composition answers a related but different question — what fraction of a compound's own mass comes from one element. Carbon contributes 12 g/mol to CO₂'s total 44 g/mol molar mass, so carbon's percent composition is (12 / 44) × 100 ≈ 27.3%.

Dilution factor: how much a stock solution was stretched

Dilution factor compares a starting (stock) concentration to a final concentration. Diluting a 1 M stock down to 0.1 M is a dilution factor of 10 — often written as a "1:10 dilution."

Choosing the right one

Use mass percent or ppm for quick lab concentration; molality when temperature independence matters; percent composition for describing what's inside a single compound; and dilution factor for serial dilution planning.
