Strength and Power Training Metrics Beyond 1RM
Training volume, workout density, rep tempo, stride length, and Sayers vertical jump power — five calculations for tracking strength training beyond just the weight on the bar.
One-rep max gets most of the attention, but these five metrics capture other dimensions of strength and power training that matter just as much for progress.
Training volume: the total work performed
Volume is sets × reps × weight. Four sets of 8 reps at 60 kg comes to 4 × 8 × 60 = 1,920 kg of total volume for that exercise — tracking this over time, not just the top weight lifted, often reveals progress that a single heavy set can't show.
Workout density: volume relative to time
Dividing total volume by total workout time in minutes gives a density figure — 10,000 lb of volume in 90 minutes is about 111.1 lb/minute. Increasing density (more work in the same or less time) is one legitimate way to progressively overload a program without adding weight or reps.
Rep tempo: controlling time under tension
A "2-1-2-1" tempo notation means 2 seconds lowering, 1 second pause, 2 seconds lifting, 1 second pause — 6 seconds per rep. Across 20 reps, that's 120 seconds of total time under tension for the set, a variable some hypertrophy-focused programs manipulate deliberately.
Sayers vertical jump power: estimating explosive power output
The Sayers equation estimates peak power from jump height and body mass: Power = 60.7 × jump height(cm) + 45.3 × body mass(kg) − 2055. It's a validated field test correlating well with force-plate measurements, useful for tracking explosive power without lab equipment.
Stride length: calibrating distance from steps
Dividing distance covered by step count gives average stride length — 1,000 meters in 600 steps is a stride length of about 1.67 meters, useful for calibrating a fitness tracker's step-based distance estimates to your actual gait.
