The harder question: how many more can I miss?

Given a required attendance threshold for the full term, the calculation gets more interesting: first find the minimum classes that must be attended (required% × total classes in term, rounded up), then subtract what's already been attended from what's left. If the term has 45 total classes with an 80% requirement, the minimum required attendance is ceil(0.80 × 45) = 36 classes — having already attended 27 out of 30 held so far, there's room to miss some of the remaining 15 classes while still reaching 36 attended, but not unlimited slack.

Study time: total hours divided by days remaining

Hours Per Day = Total Study Hours Needed / Days Until Exam. Needing an estimated 40 hours of total study time with 14 days until the exam: 40/14 ≈ 2.86 hours per day — a number that immediately tells you whether the plan is realistic given other daily commitments, which a vague "study a lot before the test" plan never would.

Why front-loading study time usually beats even distribution

While the formula gives an even daily average, cognitive science research on spaced repetition generally favors starting earlier with lighter daily sessions rather than back-loading the same total hours into the final few days — the total hours calculated by the formula matter, but how they're distributed across the available days also meaningfully affects retention.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing "classes attended" with "classes remaining" when calculating how many more absences are allowable — the calculation needs the full term's total class count, not just what's happened so far
  • Estimating total study hours needed without accounting for how well you already know the material — a flat hours estimate ignores that some topics need far more time than others
  • Treating an even daily study-hours average as a rigid schedule rather than a planning baseline to adjust around actual availability
