What Score You Actually Need on a Final Exam
How to solve backward from a target grade to the score needed on a remaining exam, worked through with a real example.
"What do I need on the final?" is one of the most searched academic questions every exam season — and it's really just the weighted-average grade formula solved backward for one missing variable.
Setting up the equation
If your current grade (before the final) is C, the final is worth weight w (as a decimal), and your target overall grade is T, then:
T = C × (1 − w) + (Needed Score) × w
Solving for the needed score: Needed Score = (T − C×(1−w)) / w
Worked example
Currently at 88%, with the final worth 20% of the overall grade, targeting a 90% final grade: Needed Score = (90 − 88×0.8) / 0.2 = (90 − 70.4) / 0.2 = 19.6/0.2 = 98%. A fairly high bar, but achievable — and precisely calculable rather than guessed at.
Why a small weight makes the needed score swing wildly
If that same final were worth only 10% instead of 20% (holding the same 88% current grade and 90% target), the needed score jumps to (90 − 88×0.9)/0.1 = (90−79.2)/0.1 = 108% — mathematically impossible, revealing that the 90% target simply isn't reachable with a lightly-weighted final and an 88% starting grade. A heavier final weight gives more room to move the overall grade; a lighter one gives less.
Test score percentage: the simpler, related calculation
Once a test is graded, the resulting percentage is a much simpler Type-1 percentage problem: Score% = (Correct Answers / Total Questions) × 100. Getting 45 out of 60 correct: (45/60) × 100 = 75% — no weighting involved, just a straightforward ratio.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting that a "needed score" above 100% means the target grade is mathematically unreachable given the current standing and the final's weight — not a sign of a calculation error
- Using the wrong weight (confusing the final exam's weight with, say, the midterm's weight) when solving the equation
- Assuming a syllabus's stated category weights are exactly what will be used — some instructors apply grade curves or drop lowest scores, which change the effective weighting
