A single blood pressure reading — "120 over 80" — actually contains more information than most people extract from it.

Pulse pressure: the gap between the two numbers

Pulse pressure is systolic minus diastolic. A 120/80 reading has a pulse pressure of 40 mmHg — a widening pulse pressure over time (even with normal-looking individual numbers) can be a marker worth discussing with a healthcare provider, since it reflects arterial stiffness.

Mean arterial pressure: the average pressure over a full cardiac cycle

MAP weights diastolic more heavily than systolic, since the heart spends more time in the diastolic phase: MAP = diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) / 3. A 120/80 reading gives a MAP of 80 + (120−80)/3 ≈ 93.3 mmHg — the number clinicians often use to assess organ perfusion, especially in critical care settings.

Averaging multiple readings: reducing single-reading noise

Blood pressure fluctuates naturally with stress, activity, and even measurement technique. Averaging three readings taken a minute apart gives a more reliable number than trusting any single reading — a standard practice in clinical settings for exactly this reason.
