Body Composition Indices Beyond BMI
Body Adiposity Index, BMI Prime, Ponderal Index, waist-to-height ratio, and FFMI — five alternative ways to assess body composition.
BMI is the most familiar body composition metric, but it has well-known limitations — these five alternatives each address a different one of them.
Body Adiposity Index: estimating body fat without a scale
BAI uses only hip circumference and height: (hip cm / height m^1.5) − 18. A 100 cm hip and 170 cm height gives a BAI of roughly 27.1% — useful specifically because it doesn't require a weight measurement at all, estimating body fat from body shape instead.
BMI Prime: BMI as a ratio to the healthy limit
BMI Prime divides your BMI by 25 (the upper edge of the "normal" BMI range), so a BMI Prime of 1.0 sits exactly at that boundary — a quick way to see at a glance how far above or below the threshold someone falls.
Ponderal Index: BMI's cousin for very tall or short people
Ponderal Index uses height cubed instead of squared: weight(kg) / height(m)³. A 70 kg person at 1.75 m has a Ponderal Index of about 13.06 — this cubic relationship makes PI more proportionally accurate than BMI for people at the extremes of height.
Waist-to-height ratio: a simple cardiometabolic screening tool
Dividing waist circumference by height (85 cm / 175 cm ≈ 0.486) gives a ratio increasingly used as a quick cardiometabolic risk screen — many clinicians suggest keeping this ratio under 0.5 as a simple rule of thumb.
FFMI: quantifying muscularity independent of body fat
Fat-Free Mass Index divides lean mass by height squared: 65 kg / 1.8 m² ≈ 20.06 — a way to assess muscularity that BMI can't distinguish, since BMI doesn't separate muscle mass from fat mass at all.
Five lenses, one clearer picture
Each of these indices corrects for a specific blind spot in BMI — body shape, threshold context, height extremes, waist-specific risk, or muscle mass. Try the Body Adiposity Index calculator, BMI Prime calculator, Ponderal Index calculator, waist-to-height ratio calculator, and FFMI calculator.
