Exterior Finishing Estimates: Insulation, Windows, Stucco, and Paint
How to estimate insulation batts, window-to-wall ratio, stucco coverage, and paint gallons for finishing a building's exterior.
The final finishing pass on a building's envelope involves four distinct area-based calculations, each with its own unit and waste considerations.
Insulation batts: coverage area, rounded up
Batt count is total area to insulate divided by a single batt's coverage area, always rounded up — 360 sq ft of wall divided by 15 sq ft per batt requires 24 full batts, with a small overage typically added for cutting around framing and outlets.
Window-to-wall ratio: a design and energy-code metric
WWR is total window area divided by total wall area. 100 sq ft of windows in an 800 sq ft wall gives a 12.5% ratio. Residential buildings commonly run 15-25% WWR, while glass-heavy commercial buildings can run far higher — and many energy codes cap WWR or require better glazing above a threshold.
Stucco coverage: perimeter times height, minus openings
Stucco area is building perimeter × wall height, minus door and window openings. A 220 ft perimeter with 10 ft walls and no deductions covers 2,200 sq ft — the number a stucco contractor needs to quote material and labor.
Paint coverage: area times coats, divided by coverage rate
Paint gallons needed is (area × number of coats) divided by the paint's coverage rate per gallon, rounded up. 600 sq ft painted twice with a product covering 350 sq ft/gallon requires ceiling(1,200 / 350) = 4 gallons.
