Blood Alcohol Estimation and Daily Sugar Limits Explained

Blood alcohol estimation and daily sugar limits are both population-derived guidelines scaled to individual body characteristics — one to body weight and sex, the other to total calorie intake.
The Widmark BAC formula
BAC = ((Standard Drinks × 14) / (Weight in grams × Distribution Ratio)) × 100 − (0.015 × Hours Elapsed). The distribution ratio (roughly 0.68 for men, 0.55 for women) accounts for average differences in body water content, since alcohol distributes through body water, not fat tissue.
Worked example
4 standard drinks, a 70kg woman (distribution ratio 0.55), 3 hours since the first drink: alcohol grams = 4 × 14 = 56g. Raw BAC = (56 / (70,000 × 0.55)) × 100 ≈ 0.1455. Subtracting elimination over 3 hours (0.015 × 3 = 0.045): final estimated BAC ≈ 0.1005, above the common 0.08 legal driving limit in many jurisdictions.
Why this is an estimate, not a measurement
The Widmark formula was derived from population averages and doesn't account for individual metabolism, food intake, medication interactions, or the specific timing of each drink (as opposed to treating them as consumed all at once). Real BAC can differ meaningfully from the formula's estimate in either direction — which is exactly why this kind of calculation should never be used to decide whether it's safe to drive.
Daily sugar limit: a percentage of calories, capped
The American Heart Association guideline suggests roughly 10% of calories from added sugar, converted to grams (dividing by 4 kcal/gram), further capped at a fixed maximum by sex (36g for men, 25g for women). At 2,500 kcal for a woman: 10% of calories = 250 kcal, ÷4 = 62.5g — but the 25g sex-specific cap applies instead, since it's the lower of the two values, giving a final recommended limit of 25 grams.
Why the cap matters more than the percentage at higher calorie intakes
At low calorie intakes, the percentage-based calculation is usually the binding constraint; at higher calorie intakes (as in this example), the fixed sex-based cap typically becomes the limiting factor instead. This is exactly why the formula takes the minimum of the two values, rather than relying on the percentage alone.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using any BAC estimate to judge whether driving is safe — always use a designated driver or rideshare instead, regardless of a calculated number
- Assuming natural sugars in fruit or plain dairy count toward the added-sugar limit — they don't, only added/free sugars do
- Forgetting BAC elimination rate (about 0.015 per hour) is itself an average, with real individual variation
