Customer and Workforce Growth Metrics That Actually Matter
Net Promoter Score, customer churn rate, labor productivity, and revenue per employee — the metrics that reveal whether growth is healthy or just noisy.
Revenue growth can mask real problems underneath. These four metrics look past the top line.
Net Promoter Score: loyalty in one number
NPS is the percentage of Promoters (survey respondents scoring 9-10) minus the percentage of Detractors (scoring 0-6). With 60 promoters, 30 passives, and 10 detractors out of 100 respondents, NPS is 60% − 10% = 50 — a strong score by most industry benchmarks, where anything above 0 is considered acceptable and above 50 is considered excellent.
Customer churn rate: the leak in the bucket
Churn rate measures the percentage of customers lost over a period. Losing 40 customers out of a base of 1,000 in a month is a 4% monthly churn rate — compounded over a year, that's a meaningfully different retention picture than it first appears, since churn compounds against a shrinking base.
Labor productivity: output per hour worked
Labor productivity divides total output by total labor hours. Producing 1,000 units using 250 labor hours gives a productivity rate of 4 units per hour — a number worth tracking over time to see whether process improvements or new equipment are actually paying off.
Revenue per employee: the efficiency benchmark
Revenue per employee divides total revenue by headcount. $8,000,000 in revenue across 100 employees gives $80,000 in revenue per employee — a widely used (if imperfect) way to compare operational efficiency between companies of different sizes, though the right benchmark varies enormously between asset-light and labor-intensive industries.
The combined read
A business can grow revenue while NPS quietly declines and churn creeps up — a classic sign that growth is being bought (through marketing spend) rather than earned (through retention).
