Swimming Pace and Training Load: Two Ways to Quantify a Workout
How swim pace per 100 meters and session training load (sRPE) are calculated, with real workout examples.
Swim pace and training load quantify very different aspects of a workout — one measures how fast you moved, the other measures how much total stress the session placed on your body — but both reduce a workout to a single trackable number.
Swim pace: time per 100 meters, not per kilometer
Unlike running (typically paced per km or mile), swimming is conventionally paced per 100 meters, since pool lengths and swim sets are usually measured in that unit. Pace per 100m = (Total Minutes / Total Distance) × 100. Swimming 2,000 meters in 40 minutes: (40/2,000) × 100 = 2.0 minutes per 100m — a pace that can then be used to predict times for other distances, the same way running pace predicts race times at different lengths.
Training load: duration times perceived effort
Session Training Load = Duration (minutes) × RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion, typically on a 1-10 scale). A 45-minute session at an RPE of 8: Training Load = 45 × 8 = 360 — a unitless number specifically meant for relative comparison, not an absolute physical measurement like calories or watts.
Why training load uses a subjective input (RPE) at all
Unlike heart rate or power output, RPE captures how hard a session felt, which accounts for factors objective measurements might miss — heat, fatigue, stress, and sleep quality all affect perceived effort independently of the actual work performed, making sRPE (session RPE) load a surprisingly robust way to track cumulative training stress over time, despite being based on a subjective 1-10 rating rather than a hard physical measurement.
Why coaches track training load trends, not single sessions
A single day's training load number means little in isolation — what matters is the trend over a week or month, and particularly sudden spikes in cumulative load, which are associated with elevated injury risk. This is exactly why training load calculations are typically summed across a training week or block rather than evaluated session by session.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing swim pace directly to running pace as if they were on the same scale — different sports use different conventional pacing units for good reason (stroke mechanics and pool measurement differ fundamentally from running)
- Treating a single day's training load as meaningful without the surrounding week's context and trend
- Using an inconsistent personal RPE scale from session to session, which undermines the value of tracking training load trends over time
